Do I need Claude Pro for my business, or is free enough?

What the free plan actually gives a business

The free plan is not a crippled demo. It is the same Claude, with the same core work surfaces, on a smaller usage allowance. For a five to fifty person service business testing whether this is worth anything, that is usually the right place to start.

The main thing you give up is room to run. Anthropic's support documentation says the free plan has a session based usage limit that resets every five hours, that the number of messages you can send varies based on demand, and that Claude will tell you when you have hit the limit. There is no published fixed message count, and Anthropic reserves the right to apply other limits, so do not plan around a specific number you read on a blog.

• ·Code execution and file creation, which Anthropic documents as available to all users including Free, on web, desktop, and mobile. This is what produces real .xlsx, .pptx, .docx, and PDF files you can download. If it is off, you turn it on under Settings and then Capabilities.

What Pro adds, in plain terms

Pro is $20 per month in the US, or $200 billed annually, with pricing shown in local currency where supported. Anthropic states that Pro gives at least five times the usage per session compared to the free service, plus priority access during high traffic periods and early access to new features. Pro also carries a weekly usage limit that applies across all models on top of the five hour session limit, and you can watch both in Settings and then Usage.

Pro is where the five project cap stops mattering. Anthropic documents the five project maximum for free accounts specifically and does not publish that ceiling for paid plans. Pro also includes access to Claude Code and Cowork, which matter to a technical operator and mostly do not matter to a practice manager writing patient letters.

One thing Pro does not include: API access through the Claude Console is billed separately. If someone tells you a $20 subscription covers building a custom integration, they are wrong.

Expanded project knowledge, where Anthropic's own docs disagree

Projects can hold more reference material than fits in a single conversation by using retrieval, meaning Claude searches your uploaded files and pulls in only the relevant parts instead of loading everything at once. Anthropic calls this RAG, for retrieval augmented generation, and says it expands project capacity by up to 10x.

Here is the honest problem. As of this writing, two Anthropic support articles say different things about who gets it. The projects article says enhanced project knowledge with RAG is only available on paid plans. The dedicated RAG article says it is available for all Claude plans including free. Both are linked below so you can check whether they still conflict.

The practical advice: do not buy a subscription for this one feature. Load your documents into a free project and see whether it holds them. If it does, you have your answer. If it stops you, that is a real signal to upgrade. Separately, project content is cached, so reusing the same uploaded documents does not burn through your allowance the way re-uploading them in every chat would. That is a reason to use projects on any plan.

What Team adds beyond Pro, and when it is actually the answer

Team is not just Pro with a bigger allowance. It is the plan where Claude stops being a personal tool and becomes shared infrastructure, and the specific thing you are buying is shared projects. On Team and Enterprise plans, a project can be shared with other people in your organization with view or edit permissions, so the intake instructions or the proposal template one person built become something the whole front desk uses. On Pro, that project lives in one person's account and nobody else can touch it.

Team requires a minimum of two members and supports up to 150 seats. Standard seats are $25 per member per month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually. Premium seats, meant for heavy users, are $125 monthly or $100 annually, and you can mix seat types in one organization. Prices listed are for US customers, exclude tax, and vary by region.

There is also a contractual difference that matters for client work. Anthropic's privacy documentation states that by default it will not use inputs or outputs from its commercial products, which include Claude for Work, to train models. Consumer plans, Free, Pro, and Max, are covered by separate consumer terms with a model improvement setting you control in your own privacy settings. If you handle client or patient information, read both before deciding, and treat this as a starting point rather than a compliance sign off.

The recommendation: start free, then watch for three signals

Start on free. Not as a trial you rush through, but as a real two or three week test on work you actually do: the recurring client email, the proposal you rewrite every month, the spreadsheet someone rebuilds by hand. Most owners who ask this question have not yet found one repeatable task worth paying for, and $20 a month spent before you find it is $20 spent on hope.

Then upgrade on evidence, not enthusiasm. Three signals mean it is time, and they are all things you will notice without looking for them.

If none of those three has happened after a few weeks of honest use, free is still the right plan and there is nothing wrong with you. If all three happened in your first week, you already know Claude is doing real work, and Pro at $20 is the cheapest hour of labor you will buy this month. Prices, usage limits, and plan features change at Anthropic's discretion, so check claude.ai/upgrade for current terms in your region before you commit.

• ·You are hitting the usage limit in the middle of something, not at the end. Getting cut off mid task is different from running out after you finished. The first one costs you real time.
• ·You need more than five projects. If you are deleting a project to make room for another, the cap is now shaping your work.
